How To Add Character to your room with Box Trim and Crown Molding
Most new construction homes lack the architectural character found in older homes, leaving spaces feeling flat or cookie-cutter. While some builders offer trim upgrades, many do not, however, box trim and crown molding can be added later to instantly elevate a room and create a more custom feel.
I’ve lived in my new construction home for over 10 years, and this year I began updating the upstairs guest bedrooms. The first guest room overlooks the patio and garden and faces west, which means it gets the best light and evening sunsets. I wanted this space to feel special.
Originally, this room was purely functional. It served as storage while our basement was under renovation. Once the boxes were moved, all that remained was a bed.
BEFORE
I challenged myself to create a hotel-inspired guest bedroom on a budget. Serene, elevated, and welcoming. I layered in furniture, window treatments, and décor, using pieces I already owned. While the room improved, it still felt unfinished.
I asked my Instagram followers whether I should add box trim and crown molding to the space and the answer was a clear….
YES!!!!!!
Architectural detail is the difference between a styled room and a finished one.
Even a well dressed space can feel incomplete. Adding box trim and crown molding introduces depth, structure, and visual interest, creating a more intentional and custom look. These details can make rooms feel taller, layered, and more refined even with standard 8-foot ceilings without feeling overdone.
I’m not a DIYer, but I am handy. After receiving a quote that exceeded my budget (remember the challenge!); I began researching alternatives and discovered Olidyl Design Studio. They offer self-adhesive wall molding kits that make box trim far more approachable for homeowners tackling projects themselves.
Having a clear design plan and pre-measured system ensures the finished result looks polished and intentional. Once box trim and crown molding were added to my design plan, the walls became a design feature. Grounding the furniture and enhancing the overall mood.
My followers were right. Architectural detail always elevates a room!
Box Trim in bedrooms inspiration
Below are a few inspiration images that show how box trim and crown molding can elevate bedroom spaces when done thoughtfully. Notice the spacing, proportion, and how the trim complements the room’s scale rather than competing with the furnishings.
Adding character to a room doesn’t require a full renovation. In many cases, architectural details like box trim and crown molding are the missing layer that transforms a space from simple to refined especially in new construction homes.
