Low-Maintenance Landscaping for a Resort-Inspired backyard
Now that the patio extension is completed, and the design plan is known; it’s time to landscape!
When considering the landscape for the backyard, I wanted to keep it simple. I already have a fully grown front yard and side yard that requires weeding, edging, and mulching each year. So, I knew I wanted a no to low maintenance. In the inspiration pic above you see the dwarf evergreen shrubs (possibly sprinter boxwoods) that frame the pergola seating area.
I believe that evergreens are the foundation of a flowerbed and perennials are the work horses. In fashion, when you purchase luxury goods you have to think about cost per wear. With perennials you get your cost per season - you pay once for perennials and they come back each year. They also offer color (depending on the lighting needed) by blooming. Then when those blossoms fade out you still have the green leaves. You get so much bang for your buck with perennials. In addition, annuals are the accessories to the garden; like jewelry for your outfit. Annuals are added to enhance the flower bed. These don’t come back every year, they’re mainly used for show.
No to Low Maintenance Perennials
Hostas
Daylillies
Boxwoods
Heuchera
Azelea
Salvia
Hydrangea
As long as you keep it simple, the maintenance will be low effort.
When designing your landscape keep in mind how much energy you will have to keep it up. Even with no to low maintenance landscape it still requires a little upkeep like mulching each year. Mulch is important for moisture and reducing weeds.
