If you’ve been following along, you know that last year we finished our patio extension. It was a major project, and while we loved the outcome, we didn’t get to finish styling the space. Between budget limits and the summer heat kicking in early, the decorating got pushed to the side. This year, I’m picking up where we left off—and bringing in some serious vacation vibes. Above is the design mood board I created to bring my vision to life—equal parts tropical, timeless, and tailored to our budget.

inspired by saint lucia

Last fall, we took a trip to the Royalton Saint Lucia, and I’ve been dreaming about that resort ever since. It was beautiful and relaxing, but what really stuck with me were the beach cabanas. Each one had a TV, ceiling fan, and dry bar—basically a luxury lounge right on the sand.

When I looked at our 12’x12’ gazebo back home, I realized it was almost the same size as those cabanas. That got the wheels turning. I wanted to recreate that same relaxing, upscale resort feel right in our backyard—but without the luxury price tag.

creating the look for less

I started by shopping smart. I found pieces at Home Depot, Amazon, Target, At Home, and West Elm that offered style and value. My design motto is simple: use what you have and build upon it!

The striped outdoor rug from last season helped anchor the design. I added neutral and black elements—like textured pillows, a black vase, and a graphic planter—to create a modern indoor feel in the gazebo.

The rattan chandelier is a showstopper. It’s budget friendly but has high impact, and it pulls in that laid back resort energy I loved in Saint Lucia.

I love the bistro inspired barstools. They remind me of resort cafés and give the space a fun, approachable vibe.

tropical touches on a budget

To bring in the Caribbean vibe, I’m adding a tall palm plant in the corner of the gazebo. There’s something about the sound of those leaves swaying in the summer breeze that instantly transports you. It’s such a simple addition, but it makes a big impact.

a personal touch

One of my favorite pieces in the space is the framed art—a nod to resort living with a twist. I originally wanted a Slim Aarons photo, but I couldn't find one that reflected Black culture or people who looked like me. Eventually, I came across a beautiful reproduction from Jay-Z’s cannabis brand, Monogram, ad campaign. You can read more about that campaign here.

The image was inspired by Slim Aarons’ iconic “Keep Your Cool” photo but features Black models in a similar luxurious poolside setting. It’s stylish, culturally relevant, and the perfect conversation piece.

my final thoughts

Creating a resort inspired backyard doesn’t have to break the bank. With a little creativity, smart shopping, and inspiration from places that feed your soul, you can bring vacation home—permanently.

What’s one element you’d add to your outdoor space to give it that resort feel? Share in the comments. I’d love to hear!
